Some recipes call for vanilla extract, while others call for vanilla beans. Vanilla extract can be found at most grocery stores. Make sure you are getting pure vanilla extract, not imitation vanilla. I was only able to find vanilla beans locally for an exorbitant price. However, I found them at a reasonable price online:
